Atlanta Metro Lions serve routinely in local projects - raising money for the Georgia Lions Lighthouse for the Blind, the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind, numerous Health Fairs; as well as scholarship funds. We are board members, client finders, advocates, hand-holders, nurturer and transportation providers. We have collected thousands of pairs of used eyeglasses and cell phones since our inception and a large number of hearing aids for recycling. These glasses and hearing aids are cleaned, classified, packaged for proper prescription and used world-wide.
We work with youth - especially we've worked with G.A. Towns Elementary School and Myles Elementary Schools in the southwest Atlanta area. We have provided funds for specific school projects, acted as role models, reading to young students and participated in various school activities. We contribute to school field trips, providing needy students with eyeglasses and whatever the schools request from us.
We support traditional Lion causes. Together with other Georgia Lions we collect money on "White Cane Days" each April specifically for donation to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse for the Blind. We also give to the various Leaderdog organizations for their use in training dogs to help blind people live an independent lifestyle.
We support the Lions Clubs International Foundation, both with our own funds and with gifts and donations from others. LCIF projects are extremely diverse and include activities like training indigenous health workers in developing countries; arranging and funding large scale vision services around the world; making large donations to Tsunami survivors; making large donations to Katrina and Rita victims and survivors; and providing manpower and money to the hurricane ravaged Carribean Islands, Florida, Louisiana and Texas from recent hurricanes Gustave, Hannah and Ike. Lions Clubs International is the largest service organization in the world!
We support our local community causes, such as:
Diabetes Association (National and Georgia)
Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation of Georgia
Atlanta Fire Station #16
Fulton County National Adoption Day
Adamsville Recreation Center
National Kidney Foundation
International Peace Poster Contest
ACE Aviation Academy
Just Us Blind Girls
Not only do we donate money, our members volunteer hundreds of hours to numerous community festivals, health screenings, community walks, and wherever we are asked to serve. We also volunteer time to wash and sort used eyeglasses at the Lighthouse and help out at the Good Samaritan Clinic. We serve in numerous capacities.
Our primary annual fundraiser, the "Fabulous Food Tasting Extravaganza," is held every October. Cooking and serving up to 400+ attendees, we raised more than 90% of the funds that we donate each year from this one event. There are guest chefs from area restaurants, schools, family and friends; as well as chefs from the Atlanta Metro Lions Club to provide a tremendous amount of food to be eaten and enjoyed. Foods range from appetizers to desserts. It is always an awesome event.
Supporting charity and serving our community is not all that we do. We like to show our appreciation to others who serve our community. One way we do this is with our annual Public Safety Banquet where we honor members of the public safety sector who go beyond duty with their involvement in their community and their support of civic organizations.
Since our charter, Atlanta Metro Lions Club quickly became and has remained one of the largest and most active clubs in Georgia. Centered in Southwest Atlanta, we represent the entire metro Atlanta area. We proudly boast that we are part of Lion District 18-A which covers most of Northwest Georgia. Our club celebrated our first Vice District Governor and District Governor Vanessa Stanley from 2006-2008. PDG Stanley served the district and state very well and made us very proud!
Always looking for service-oriented individuals, we would welcome your visit to one of our meetings. If you are interested in joining us in doing "marvelous work," please click here to go to our contact page. One of our greatest ambitions is spreading Lionism - we are fully committed to eliminating blindness and serving humanity. The more members we have, the more "marvelous work" we can do.
